Shakespeare's New Place

A year or so ago, when Shakespeare’s New Place had yet to take physical shape, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust were understandably keen to tell the public all about it. More importantly, they wanted to show the public.

But since the location was essentially a building site at that stage, photography was out. We were going to have to think differently, and the answer was illustration.

Setting the scene

Using site visits, the architect’s models, we illustrated a series of scenes that described the journey around Shakespeare’s New Place. Our clean, graphic style was in keeping with the Shakespeare’s New Place exhibition concepts, using solid colour and simplified shapes.

We populated these scenes with a selection of figures: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust volunteers and visitors. To complete the suite we made a menagerie of animals likely to be found around the site, much of which is outdoors.
