In with the old and new—Locatedin the new and upcoming area of Pantai Indah Kapuk in Northern Jakarta,Porterhouse is a contemporary fusion restaurant with an eye for design. Productand Interior designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo conceptualized a hip new dining placethat juxtaposes old and new elements in an innovative way.

The 592meter square restaurant is situated in a 2-storey“shop-house” building that is popular in Indonesia at the moment. In order tocreate a casual – communal atmosphere, Alvin proposes an open and airylayout segmented by see-through frames and trellises. For those craving foran alfresco dining experience, the outdoor area is fitted with severallarge, cushioned cage-like benches distributed sporadically.

Porterhouse is proud to have adopted the locavore approach to design. Most of the material used in this restaurant were upcycled products sourced from all over Java. Indonesia’s artisanal culture also allows for one-of-a-kind customization.
Many of the furniture and interior elements were designed specifically for this
project. The contemporary patterns on the cushions were batik-stamped by hand in Solo, central Java. Likewise, the old window trellis synonymous with 70s-style Javanese houses took on a new life as geometric wall features. Similar trellises also function as room dividers such as the one situated at the center of the
restaurant. This particular area is elevated to create a center-stage feel, which is then balanced with the usage of low tables and chairs.

The semi private dining areas on the second floor are enclosed with old wooden door and window frames to lend intimacy and privacy. Long wooden tables are placed to enhance communal gatherings while modern wooden and rattan chairs serve as the perfect complements.
Overall, Porterhouse is a unique dining destination that will appeal to discerning and design driven individuals looking to gather in a casual yet comfortable environment. Its tasteful blend of local materials with contemporary approach creates a new progressive feel, that definitely reflects the zest of contemporary Indonesian identity.
