Heraldic Design for Hart House
A University of Toronto Project
We live in synergistic times. Synergy may be defined as two or more things functioning together to produce a result not independently obtainable.

Although we function in a society full of areas of specialization and varied disciplines, our need to depend on each others’ gifts and knowledge will be imminent as we move forward. This is what I think Hart House represents. It is an institution that foster social, artistic, cultural and recreational experiences while encouraging cross-cultural endeavours to work in conjunction with each other. To reflect this concept, this design features two (six-element) components. The number six in this design is represented by the social, artistic, cultural, recreational, holistic (mind, body and soul) and educational experiences that Hart House champions on a daily basis.

The first core component of the design are the six symbols of people that forms a circle as they reach their collective hands towards the middle. This “huddle” concept is really important for me as it encompasses the notion of being together as a singular entity.

The second component are the arrows that emanate from within as a result of this community collaboration that is Hart House in essence. Each of these arrows represents the social, artistic, cultural, recreational, holistic and educational experiences that result from the convergence of everyone’s voices, rhythms and traditions.
