The Dragon's Lair

The Dragon's Lair
Dragons from all over the imagination...

This was sketched in the style of the Middle American (Incan, Mayan, Aztec) version of the dragon, the quetzalcoatl. The green-and-gold coloring reflects the warm hues of that part of the world. Xotipal has no upper arms, but does possess powerful wings, a prehensile tail, and dangerous claws on its feet.

This dragon does not like to be kept waiting...

The purple and blue colors convey the coolness of this dragon's personality, with a cherry-red background. This is the 'traditional' Western European version of the dragon. Large, bat-like wings, upper arms and lower legs adorned with razor-sharp claws, and a thick tail.

Water Spirit

This water naga incorporates many different aspects. Its head is based on an Oriental dragon, with its slanted, cat-like eyes and hair around its face and head. Its legs are flipper-like to enable its swift passage through the water. The fins also help it to glide with the ocean currents.

I wanted to emphasize the dreamy, ethereal quality of being underwater, so I chose chalk pastels for this drawing. The green/azure background helps with this effect.

A study in opposites: fire and water face off, with the Dragon Maiden as a moderator between the two. I enjoyed painting this particular piece.

Hybrida

This one seemed to evolve on the page as I was drawing it. Yes, almost every scale is individually drawn and colored, as well as the fur on the wings. The process took longer than I expected, three different sessions of about 25 minutes each.

One of my favorite pieces...a dragon in majestic flight. It was a challenge to contrast the fur with the scales (as well as for Hybrida, above), but it took some careful shading and blending to achieve the effect I wanted.

Amphiteres have no front or back legs, but powerful wings. Her wings and tail are adorned with elaborate feathers.

Taking a Nap

I sketched this during my daughters' naps. I used a kneaded eraser to add the white highlights in the dragon's coils.

Not quite like the Loch Ness Monster of Scottish fame, but he makes an occasional appearance during stormy weather. I used five different shades of blue for the dragon itself, and another two for the ocean and sky.

He returns when Winter loses its grip...

His skin is smooth like a lizard's, but don't underestimate his arrow-shaped tail. He won't hesitate to use it!
