One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. It is one of the seven wonders of the natural world and it contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays.

However, it is now a bleak view as scientists have seen 60 to 90 percent of the corals bleached at many of the sights they’ve surveyed. Bleaching occurs when heat stress causes the colorful algae that live in coral to be expelled.

This piece of typographic installation discusses about the achingly beautiful seascapes and the threats of the Reef’s survival. It highlights the issue of it being more fragile than fearsome and challenges the viewers to fully appreciate why it demands them to be its global caretakers.

The written piece for the typographic installation is taken from a first account excerpt from Iain Mccalman’s The Reef, A Passionate History. The installation is intended to be exhibited at the Carriageworks.

The nature of a single thread is thin and light, yet when many pieces of thread come to form an embroidery, it creates a beautiful piece of art. Likewise, the nature of corals are thin, light and fragile, yet it forms a beautiful seascape at the Reef. The vibrant colours from the thread also mimics the corals.
