‘The Avengers’.
‘The Avengers’ translates in French as ‘Chapeau Melon et Bottes de Cuir’ - literaly ‘Bowler Hat and Leather Boots’. Very popular in France when first aired on television, it is still part of French popular culture - I am quite a fan myself and decided to work on this TV show for the assignement.
I chose to stay as minimalist as possible in depicting the ‘So British’ spirit of the show on the posters, while raising the interest of the viewers on this teaser campaign. I decided to combine British traditions and symbols of the show: the characters John Steed and Emma Peel often drink tea together and always react with composure and phlegm during episodes. Therefore, each poster contains symbols of the show humoristically combined: a teapot topped with a bowler hat, a black boot opening with the string of a tea bag in place of a zipper, and a tea cup with the handle of an umbrella as a spoon. I completed the effect with Laura Ashley pattern to underline the old fashionned British style of the show.
The adequate baseline was then obvious: ‘DVD time’ as a reminder of the almost compulsory tea time tradition.
