I Don't Make Jokes Anymore | Web Banner Illustration

This was an illustrated web banner commissioned by the author at idontmkaejokesanymore.weebly.com. The blog is self-described as: 'A honest, and often hilarious, guide to studying, showering and keeping a tiny human alive'. The main goal or this illustration was to encapsulate the essence of the blog within an image.
I loved the idea of creating this 'dishevelled' 1950s housewife, which at the same time represented the dichotomy of the blog itself: from the author's desire to be the 'perfect' mother, to the realities of unglamorous parenting duties (such as making the choice between feeding your child and showering).
Other influences included Art Deco, and fashion illustrations, since both of these schools and their design elements tend to represent a more elegant lifestyle. I riffed on these ideas in the final work, in order to play on the expectations of that imagery and create something that - like the blogger herself - was kooky and off-beat.
