Homegrown Sessions

Cube Rec / Homegrown Sessions

Cube Rec is a Guatemalan-based electronic music independent record label. Through the years I've collaborated with them in different projects and in this occasion they reached out to me to help them in the creation of the visual identity for their Homegrown Sessions. They wanted Guatemalan art and electronic music both represented in the graphic result.

For the concept, I used two main elements: Guatemalan typical textiles and 8-bit music/graphics.

Guatemalan typical textiles are characterized by the use of geometric patterns, bright colors and the abstract representation of nature or zoomorphic elements.

8-bit music also known as chip music, is a style of synthesized electronic music made using the programmable sound generator (PSG) sound chips or synthesizers. Its use is very common in arcade machines or vintage video games.

The graphics of these games are characterized for having a pixel-like look with limited use of colors. I used “Space Invaders” arcade game as a reference to develop the concept.

I recreated different characters/images that I found in Guatemalan textiles with this 8-pixel aesthetic and got my color palette from the textiles themselves.
