You are now in Scotland is a multi-disciplinary master project, which specialised in Environmental graphic Design. The project is about wayfinding as place making, challenging the idea of Airport as Non-place. In this project I took a look at Edinburgh Airport and redesigning the space with the narrative of "Natural heritage and homecoming Scotland". The 4 months long project starts with research about Scottishness and end up with exhibition. The project include aspect of Interior, Lighting, Motion graphic, Interaction design that tied together through graphic design.
In recent debate, Marc Auge defines airport as a non-place due to its nature of having no authenticity and uniformised design. And based on my observation of Edinburgh airport has no sense of place, no narrative in the design, and does not portray the concept of Scottishness. Through out the 4 months master project I decided to redesign the walkway and the seating place (based on research that have been carried on). The concept that I am using to portray Scottishness in the space is natural heritage, looking at Caledonian forest up north and the wildlife in Scotland, I proposed the walkway in theme of 'walking in the wood' which delivered by using the pierce through element on the ceiling (recreating the ambient as you walk in forest). The pierce through elements are inspired by different motives of leaves that native to Caledonian forest.
To recreate the wildlife element, motion graphic will be installed on the certain section of the wall, Deer motion graphic will be installed on the public seating area as part of Scottish discovery to replace the current Airport Gallery, and the Fish motion graphic will be installed on walkway wall, which purpose is to accompany passengers to their boarding gate. With a bit of speculative aspect, the fish will also work as your guide to boarding gate. The virtual assistant will be link through the app called Gate Pal. The design of the fish is also based on the concept of Edinburgh as water city, where water of leith and Canal run through the city. The design of the fish in the app is based on 3 different kind of Scottish native fish.
