Climbing Kilimanjaro - Timing and Logistics

Eric Lent is a former executive with the Hershey Company in the United States, Canada and Internationally. Since leaving Hershey, he has taken on responsibilities as a vice president with Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts, Americas at IHG. An avid mountain climber for many years, Eric Lent climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2010.

When it comes to ascending Mount Kilimanjaro, climbers actually enjoy quite a bit of flexibility in terms of timing. Aside from the rainy seasons of April through May and November through December, Kilimanjaro can be climbed any time of year. Many climbers consider January through March and October the ideal times of year to climb Kilimanjaro, due in large part to clear skies and a quiet environment.

The climb itself typically takes six to seven days, depending on the route chosen. Using the standard Machame Route, climbers ascend the mountain during the first five days of their trek, reaching the summit on the morning of their sixth day. The rest of the sixth day and the morning of the seventh day is spent descending Kilimanjaro to the exit gate.
