Character Design
Barack Obama | "Bridging the Education Gap" | for Education Next Magazine
Muammar Gadaffi | This was a personal piece painted shortly before his downfall, it seemed to me like he was digging his eventual martyrdom, not sure it went down like he imagined but that's part of the hubris of the whole thing. He had a great head to paint.
Portrait of Jerry Garcia for The New York Times Book Review | This was for an interesting one page article on how the Library of Congress assigns an ISBN number to a book, the ISBN number categorizes the book and is often done so based on it's title. Jerry Garcia wrote a book titled "Fat Trip" which was his term for a good groove and good times. Because of the title it was assigned an ISBN number that put it in the category with diet and food books. In bookstores it ultimately was shelved in the diet book section rather than where it belonged. That ultimately didn't help folks find the book or help sales either. A long strange trip for Jerry's book.
"Pecos Bill Rides the Tornado" for Scholastic Children's Publishing Group
Yankees' Orlando Hernandez, David Cone and Don Zimmer for The New York Times Book Review
"Who Wrote Shakespeare's Plays? | for The Weekly Reader | It is speculated by some Shakespeare scholars that his plays were in fact written by someone else and he was a front to shield the identity of the actual author or author's who for various reasons could not claim credit publicly. It is proposed that Francis Bacon, the 6th Earl of Derby and Christopher Marlowe could in fact be the true bard.
This was a commissioned family portrait. . .Easter Sunday photo from about 1960, Mom made the twin girl's Easter dresses also knitted the brother's sweaters, it's a big oil painting, about 70" wide. A retro piece and a lot of fun to paint, the first really large painting I'd ever done, have followed it with a few more. Really like painting big.
Folk Legend Paul Bunyan mixes it up in an article on Minnesota battling with south Dakota and Wisconsin for midwest, USA vacation bucks | "Tourism Wars"
In an article for Major League Baseball's all Star Game on the greatest Yankees historically to play the nine field positions  on the team, depicted are Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra,
Lou Gehrig, Derrick Jeter and Mickey Mantle to name a few.

Portrait of Langston Hughes | I'm working on a series of poets and authors, getting back to drawing and line based art, used to do a lot of these illustrations drawing with Ebony pencil on watercolor board, these are drawn with ink and brush and layered with paint textures. Really enjoy the immediacy of the medium.
