Create-A-Thon: Dalewood Middle School

Late in the spring semester of my junior year the graphic design majors participated in a 24 hour creative blitz, called Create-a-thon, designed to help a deserving community organization make their environment function more ideally in what ever ways we could. My team, made up of a few other students and professional volunteers, was tasked with creating a more lively and fun space in the lobby area of Dalewood Middle School. We knew we wanted to create an environment that was more indicative of the fabulous students that went there. That was the easy part. The hardest part? On the far ends of the lobby were these....things. Raised platforms upon which were small three legged tables, the whole of which served no discernible purpose. That's not to mention that they were located in the center of a major traffic corridor and quite permanent to boot. So, in addition to creating academic and achievement themed banners (to be placed over newly painted lockers) featuring the students of Dalewood Middle, we redesigned and repurposed the existing platforms to serve as seating for the students during and after school. Not only that, but we designed a system of preprinted banners, placed directly overhead, advising the students in this high traffic area of upcoming annual events like testing and competitions. We added newly created logo work to the floors of the main entry and designed shelving for either side of the main office to be filled with student accomplishments and achievements in the coming years. The final presentation mock ups follow.
