The Black Death had a profound impact on the health and population of Europe in the 13th Century, and its effects are long lasting. At the time, the plague created a series of religious, social and economic upheavals which had a profound effect on the course of European history. However, the subsequent literary developments resulting from the deadly disease can still be experienced today. If you find yourself feeling sick to death of something, avoiding something like the plague, or singing ring-a-ring-a rosie, you will have the Black Death to thank.
