Maral Cavner's profile

The Emory Dream Project

Emory University graduate Maral Cavner was the Founding Director of Community Building for the Emory Dream Project while pursuing her undergraduate degree. Along with several other civic-minded students, Maral Cavner worked on the Emory Dream Project.

The Emory Dream Project was founded by Emory students to help underprivileged high school students work toward their personal goals for after graduation. Students sign up to volunteer as mentors, and then take turns visiting the nearby Druid Hills High School to meet with younger students.

Mentors are matched with a small group of students, usually between four and seven. The students have a chance to discuss their college plans, struggles with applications, and barriers to success. Mentors share their own experience, offer advice, and help connect students to beneficial resources. Sessions are tailored to the needs of mentees, and include one weekly SAT prep day.

The Emory Dream Project also lends a hand with resume development, interview practice, and other necessary job skills. College fairs and admissions workshops are held periodically as well.
