Growing up in Australia I couldn't work out why all the beaches in California had these piers sticking out into the pacific. But California doesn't have a natural harbour every few miles like the eastern Australia coast - much younger geology I guess. Australia is old and worn down unlike the US west coast, which is still in flux, geologically speaking. So the piers were necessary for shipping and transport until technology and the size of the ships outdated them.
So I started shooting them, on 4x5 instant film. Got quite a few to go.
