"Isle of Spice" (a painted, wooden sculpture)

  This is the second in a series of layered and painted, wooden cutout islands. They are an homage to classic animation backgrounds and storybook illustration. This one is also influenced by vintage travel posters about India. The idea of the piece is to transport the viewer to an age of exploration before modern technology when spices were as valuable as gold and the world still held infinite mysteries and wonders.
 
  The construction and finishing of this piece was a challenge. It required many hours of hand-cutting layers with a jigsaw, detailed puttying and sanding. In the end, it has the effect of being carved out of a single block of wood.
