A Modern Musical

The Octagon Theatre Bolton were putting on the Sweeney Todd musical and wanted the show promoting to a young adult audience with a Twilight, Tim Burtonesque feel to it. The musical has strong themes of love, lust and revenge. The main characters are anti-heroes and it is difficult to create empathy for their situation. The story is well known so the task was to create an image which would make the audience question their perception of the main character, Sweeney Todd himself.
The Octagon mentioned leather and graffiti and also asked for non-traditional marketing methods which led to the creation of the tattoo. The tattoo would be attached to postcards promoting the event so teens would be more likely to pick them up. They would also work as separate promotional items. The final image is intended to make Sweeney Todd appear sexy, promote the main themes and place it in the same bracket as programmes aimed at the same audience like “True Blood”.
