Inspired by the more recent issue of lack of time children spend outside, I created a bridge from the outside world and the inside world. Reminiscent of the intimate space one has between the curtains and the window, this wall is designed to create a space within that realm. The imagery came from how one experiences a tree; such as looking up through the branches when lying down, and how the sunlight shines through different parts creating a wide range of color and light. I digitally painted the imagery using Illustrator and Photoshop and printed it on cotton canvas with a fabric printer. The wall was designed to hold up knit pockets on hooks with 'air purifying' plants inside. The pockets are knit on the Stoll machine using elastic and cashmere. The knit design went through many trials of how geometric shapes could be used to create a pocket that will grow and expand with the growing plant. The last part of the piece is that the top of the wall is digitally embroidered with UV reactive thread. This makes the thread, which is in the pattern of rain, turn from white to blue/green when it is exposed to sunlight.
Knit expandable pocket samples with a cotton/elastic yarn, knit with varying geometric shapes to optomize the full potential of the expanding pot with the growing plant.
The digital embroidery practice sample is the blue thread image to see if the repeat would work in a larger scale, and the final is pictured being embroidered on the digitally printed cotton canvas. The final embroidery was done in UV reactive thread (SolarActive) and turns from white to blue/green, when it is exposed to UV light.
