Santa Verdiana Extension

Architectural Design | iCad | Università Degli Studi Di Firenze | 2016

Location:
Florence, Italy

About:

The area is located in front of Largo Annigoni and it close the side of the historical complex of Santa
Verdiana, that partially (in open spaces as yards) could be redesigned. The design area is now an empty space made of old and ruined walls but in the next few year the University of Florence, with Township, will start to build a new building for access the S.V. area based on a competition made in 2005. The new building to design as final exam will have to be built thinking the area as free and also to think about its relationship with Largo Annigoni and with the inner yard system of Santa Verdiana.

The main idea of the project is to create an installation to revive the Largo Annigoni and attract people to the area, by creating the kind of modern looking facade with a color contrast with the surrounding but with a shape that goes with the city.
The spaces are divided to give the effect of “open kitchen restaurant” by placing exhibition pieces on the ground floor in front of the passing pedestrians and placing the study room on the upper part for the people to take a glance on the people behind the projects.

Shaping the building to get a rectangular yard and keeping the main axis of existing yards to insure continuity, then orienting the entrance toward the main street and creating cantilever to shelter the passing pedestrians. The yard taking the shape of the meant axis with the U shape of the entrance plan communicating with the arches of the faculty.

Site Plan

By orienting the north facade windows to the north the indirect light reach the study rooms avoiding excessive lighting and the heat gained from the direct light entering the space.
Ground Level

A waffle slap is used to hold the exhibition space roof, and it is being used in the same time to sit a grid  module for the exhibition units.
The unit glass panels is equipped with magnets on the side to attach to the other glass panels in addition to the upper side to attach it to the waffle slap which will have magnet stripe as well. This way we could change the position and create new alternatives of the exhibition units.
