For this module I wanted to use the project brief; ‘boundaries’, defined as ‘a border or limit’, by exploring the theme of boundaries of humanity, the recent terror attacks in France being the inspiration. The purpose to explore the aspects of how we’ve come to except terrorism with in society and the aspect of the boundaries of how other human beings can take each other’s life. This led me on to look at how the media doesn’t cover a lot of innocent people’s deaths,
Relating to a specific question in the brief which intrigued me; ‘when do we know, as human beings, when we have gone too far- beyond the boundary?’. This project has helped me to understand how political art can have particular impacts on the audience along with how work with strong political context, especially surrounding recent event, can be presented.
Having never done a politically driven piece of work I was particularly challenged, along with the aspect of not wanting to present anything to vulgar or offensive. I felt within the 18 week project after early stages of development after experimenting with more confrontational 2D forms mediums, I was set on sculptural work and using a certain material, however upon presenting in a tutorial my audience had too many pre-existing connotations.
This helped develop my project by focusing more on the intentions and how I want my viewer to interpret my piece, allowing the piece to be more self-explanatory. I feel I have also learnt not to be too fixated on a single piece and that I can change and alter my artwork at any point, showing how I can adapt and change work within a short period of time.
With the piece I have created, I find the coat of matt spray paint on the wire poppy aesthetically pleasing, pulling in the key feature of remembrance poppies for civilians being white. I also find the suspension of the poppy visually pleasing, this creates a more hard hitting thought of the innocent people killed in terrorism attack and not remembered are just a segment of time in which a tragic incident happened, leaving them just suspended in the time frame as there life was taken, along with also sometimes being forgotten by the media.
Along with these materials I used soil surrounded by a thin rope held up by wire, I feel this tied in the memorial side with using the symbolism of the poppy. Along with creating an association with the poppy, the over turned soil being a very natural substance, making the piece less abstract and more self-explanatory.
