Students for a Proper Field of Design (SPFD) was initiated to raise awareness for the ongoing frustrations students in the Graphic Design & Visual Communication program have been experiencing at California State University - Los Angeles. Although the program is fairly new, we don’t expect any foreseeable changes to come anytime soon. For this reason, we would hate for any incoming student to experience the lack of support that we have felt during the past few years.
The program provides only two full-time faculty members to educate and train as many as 150 of us per quarter. Due to the lack of teachers, there are limited courses throughout the academic year. In addition to the limited availability of courses, extremely inconvenient lab hours make for an even more problematic study in the program. Furthermore, the lab equipment suggests that we are not very deserving as students in design programs on other campuses since all of our hardware and software is outdated.
All of these factors contribute to a tedious academic experience and have determined that, after a considerable amount of research, Chancellor Charles B. Reed would forever hinder this program with great potential from ever growing and improving.
