The brief: to cut an alternate film trailer for a movie of your own choice.
I chose to cut a new trailer for the film Lost in Translation. I thought that the original trailer didn't accurately represent the mood of the film. It marketed the film as a romantic comedy, and focused on Bill Murray's character instead of featuring both of the main characters equally. I felt it didn't accurately capture the mood or highlight the cinematography which the film is famous for.
I wanted my alternate trailer to highlight the slower pace of the film and the soft, dreamlike mood and cinematography. For this to work, I decided to make an extra-long theatrical trailer to really capture the core of the film. I cut the film down to a sequence of longer pieces of footage and featured key shots, depicting the setting, characters and general storyline. I decided to keep on-screen text to a minimum, and used a similar font to the one used in the film's opening sequence. I also chose key tracks and audio clips from the film for the trailer's soundtrack.
