The Existing 80s building was used as interpretive centre for the river Murray and was in much need of a face-lift and a change of purpose. After through consultation with the client, in this case the local city council, it was decided that a new regional art gallery to support the nearby studios and to enhance the city’s arts and culture prerogative will be the most appropriate program for the iconic building.
The mast and tensile roof was removed from the centre of the cruciform, vaulted building and a new solution for the complex geometries was required. The design completes the vaults and replaces the tensile roof with a cruciform Danpalon skylight. Gallery walls were inserted to divide and enhance the space and prepare it as a flexible and usable space for holding exhibitions of various mediums. Repainted and restored the old space was celebrated with new lighting and the heritage of the place maintained.
The new South Fleureau Art Gallery was opened in early 2010 with a major regional exhibition.
A masterplan for the entire Goolwa Wharf Precinct was also undertaken as part of the works and the work continues in transforming it into a major regional arts and culture precinct.
