Humanitydepends on Earth’s ecosystems and their life-sustaining benefits, such asprovision of clean air, supply of fresh water and delivery of healthy soils. There is growing evidence of the many functions and economic benefits ofnatural ecosystems to the human being. Nevertheless, the fast depletion ofnatural resources continues worldwide. The current rate of global extinctionsof plants and animals due to human activities is more than 1,000 times higherthan the average rates observed throughout life’s history on Earth.

Republicof Serbia is one of six centres of biodiversity in Europe. Serbia ischaracterized by a high degree of genetic diversity, diversity of species andecosystems. 62 important areas for plants (IPA - Important Plant Area), 42 importantbird areas (IBA - Important Bird Area) and 40 selected areas for Primebutterflies (PBA - Prime Butterfly Area) has been allocated on the territory ofSerbia. Biological diversity of many groups of organisms is high and makes asignificant proportion of the biodiversity of Europe.

Location:Old Mountain (Stara planina)-one ofthe significant bird areas (IBA-Important Birds Area) and is specific for itsflora and fauna, protected areas, reservations and natural monuments. Untilrecently, traditional architecture was ensuring stable and rich urbanbiodiversity, but nowadays, architecture leaves no available space forwildlife, lot of new buildings and houses are being built without any planningwith many consequences on nature. There is a need for reduction of negativeimpact of urbanization on biodiversity.

Concept:building is designed as an observation tower and hummingbird feeders, deployedat several places in the Old Mountain (Staraplanina). Considering the diversity of birds that inhabit the area of OldMountain, the idea was to design building (observation tower) that wouldprovide shelter for birds, bats and insects (to provide places for nesting andfeeding of birds). Nests are an integral part of the facade, installed anddimensioned to provide shelter for many species.
