Sharp Edges Studio
Newcastle University, Australia
The aesthetic of the tool, the clean economical lines of something completely utilitarian. Even the boxboard knife with its ugly molded plastic exterior, has this in its most vital component. These remarkably beautiful geometric objects are broken off and cast aside toscatter the floors of studio spaces.

Their precision, the perfection of an object made only from one material and their edge speak a little about the architecture ideal that people have attempted to create using these delicate tips.

This Model making studio is made of a shell of these darkly glittering objects. Their edges are reflected in the windows, structure, benches and spaces of the design. Sharp edges create a dynamic and dangerous environment that reflects the very real danger of the electric powertools in use there.

This was a short design project, created with the generous blade donations of many other students in Newcastle’s Architecture Studio. It has a strong emphasis on model making, one of the most important steps in the design process.
