Ulster Museum project

For my first brief I was asked to visit the Ulster Museum to see The Age of Liberty exhibition. The exhibition consisted of around 30 garments and accessories from 1900s. The exhibition portrayed the process of dramatic transformation in fashionable dress, beginning with stiff and ladylike corset and moving towards more flowing shapes. We were asked to gather primary research about it: take photographs of the outfits, sketch some of them and gather as much information as possible about the exhibition. Below are some of the photographs I took using my phone camera:
This was the first dress from the collection and was present in the collection to show the change in the way women dresses over the years. It's a silk robe from 1770s and consisted of three pieces: panniers (undergarment), petticoats and corset. The shape of the dress had to create tiny waist and hourlass figure. The wide dress was considered very stylish and sometines reached extreme proportions. I like the fact that it was made with quite bright peach/coral colour, most of the pieces in the collection had very subtle colours.
This photograph was also taken by me at the exhibition. It presents a beaded dress from 1914, it was made of layers of silk satin a silk net which both were embroidered and beaded. Women had to move with care in this delicate dress. I really like this photograph because the dark display makes the dress stand out more because of the lighting falling straight on it.
This is the evening dress from 1912. It was made with a delicate peach silk and was heavily embellished with floral embroidery and lace. The simplicity of the dress was a direct contrast to the silhouette of Edwardian costume and the light fabric provided women with greater freedom of movement. Because the corsets were no longer in use, women still wanted some support in the bust area, which in this case was provided by heavy embellisment.
I really like this weird looking chiffon dress - it's from 1918 and it's an evening dress. The colours used - paprika and turquoise - and the emballishements are making it very interesting. Inspiration for this dress was popular 'Ballets Russes' dance company, who toured in Europe from 1909 to 1929. The fabric is very light. which makes the dress very fragile.
This is a Brown Straw Bird of Paradise Hat from 1912 and Couture Evening Dress from 1905. The fabric is very shiny and looks very soft. The fashion for wide sleeves accentuated the smallness of the waist.
Below are some observational sketches I made in the museum:
This is a pencil sketch I made in the museum and shows a silk robe from 1770s (the first picture). I have used a range of different pencils (from 6B to 2H) to create this sketch. It was very hard to ‘copy’ all those details as it had rich embroidery and lace which was difficult to draw. I’ve created half of the dress detailed and the other half was left as a basic line sketch to empasize the shape of it.
This is the Olive Green Cotton Corset from late 1800s. It had little metalic embalishements in triangular shapes and white embroidery which contrasted with green soft fabric. The buttons were used as a functional factor as opposed to previous corsets buttons, which were for decoration.
The Ladies Suit from 1913.
This outfit consisted of a jacket and a skirt, however I only liked the jacket. The skirt was very simple and contrasted with detailed coat, however I wanted to emphasize the detailed patterns of the jacket. It was made from grey fabric and all the details were black, however I would definitely add some colour to it as it was looking a little depressing.
All photographs (as well as all the research I gathered for this project) are available here - at my pinterest page
I have research lots of layouts from fashion magazines and books in order to get inspiration of how I will want my final page to look like. I have decided that the features in those magazine pages will be the most suitable for me:
This scan is from Drapers Magazine. I really like how the title was designed. The composition of the letters and the symbol creates an extraordinary effect, which I am going to use in creating my book page.
I really like the layout of the pictures on this page. Everything looks very organised and clear.
This scan is from Drapers Magazine. I really like the use of different fonts on one page. The fonts used really composes with each other, because they are all very feminine. The both sides looks great together as there is not much going on at the same time so the viewer can really focus his attention.
I really like this page and it gave me an idea to make one side of my final page black and white. It creates an interesting contrast with the colourful parts of the page. However, I'm not sure how this will look like on my final page.
This is a simple mock up of my book page, representing the placement of the pictures, fonts and overall layout.
I cut out some magazine pieces to represent individual features. Im planning to use 2 or 3 different fonts, organise the pictures and sketches in neat way and create the theme in a triangular shape (this may be tricky because the theme is The Age Of Liberty').
Because I wasn't sure if the first page design (first mock-up) would be appropriate for the book page, I have made another mock-up. I think this design looks more professional and looks neater. I took inspiration for this page from magazine pages (see above). I have decided to leave the title in the triangle shape and the differnt fonts, however I've changed the layout of the pictures/sketches and put them in the L shape. In addition I thought it would be more original if I would add half of the sketch of my dress. I'm also thinking about adding some embellishement on both sides of the title.
PAGE DEVELOPMENT:
I started off by creating a new page (File - New - International Paper - A4). Then I created grids to help me organise my page. I did them by going into View - Horizontal and then Vertical. The blue lines provided the basic structure on which the rest of my design will lie.
Straight blue lines created frame and margins, so I know that everything beyond them will be cutted out when I'll print the page.
I have added more grids to establish where my theme will be and then I made the theme in triangular shape, which was inspired by one of the magazine pages. It was very hard to get this right because it had 4 short words, but I think I managed to do it. The colours of the title are black and pink because the original theme was in those colours, so I wanted to keep the same mood.
I added my dress sketch (which was scanned earlier by pressing File - Place and chosing the image. The background of the image had grey tone, so in order to get rid of this I used Layer Mask to make make it transparent (which will be helpful when I'll add the background colour).

I could choose the brush shape and size. You can see that in places where I've used the Layer Mask the layer mask thumbnail became black, which means that these places are 100% transparent.
Next, I added the emballishements around the title. I've chosen to use the fan image from the internet and copied it so on both sides is the same picture.
I added pictures of the garments, which I took at the exhibition and my sketches (File - Place - Choose picture).
Because my sketches had white background I thought they will not look nice when I'll add the background, so double click on the lock I decided to cut off the background.
I changed the name of this layer, so it would be easier for me to distinguish the layers. When I did that the layer became unlocked.
To remove the background I clicked on the Magic Wand Tool on the left side in the tool box.
I followed the outline of the sketch to select it. When the whole sketch was selected I copied it.
Then pasted on my book page and placed where I thought it look good.
I placed the sketch of the corset next to the big sketch of the dress.
I followed the same steps with the second sketch (File - Open - Change name - Magic Wand Tool - Select image - Copy - Paste).
I placed the image next to my other sketches and photographs.
Then I added pink background, however I really didn't liked that the embellishments had this white background around them and didn't blend with the background. To fix that I clicked Blending Options.
I played with different functions to see different effects, however I've noticed that when I changed the layer's brightness to smaller, the white background of the layer blended with the layer of the page.
Blending was changed from 155 to 246.
I followed the same steps with the other layer with the embellishment.
Earlier on I forgot to blend the open space between the dress and the arm with the layer mask and I struggled to fix this, so I have decided to use different technique. Using brush I filled in the dress with the white colour, so after layering 2 layers the sketch would have white background and the space between will have the same colour as the background.
That's how the sketch looks now - I was very happy it worked.
I have decided to place the photos and sketches in the same order like in my mock-up to make the page more organised.
Next I added text. For the first part of the text I have used Perpetua Titling Mt font, which I think composed wel with the rest of the page.
The second paragraph was written using Vani font.
For the last paragraph I have used Bookman Old Style font.
This is the finished page. I'm really pleased with it, because it is the first thing I ever created using Photoshop and I thought I'm not able to use this programme, but it wasnt very hard, because I could always learn how to do specific things from the internet, for example from Lynda.com.
This is a picture of me holding a physical page.
Critique:
Why does the chosen work represent the best outcome of the options you could have developed?
I was thinking a long time how to make this page and I went through a lot of magazine and page layouts looking for inspiration. Before making the actual page I made a simple mock-up of the page, but I wasn’t entirely pleased with how it looked so I created a new one and followed the layout of it. I tried to combine pictures and text in a nice way and I am pleased with how the final page looks like.
How does your work compare with the professional work you researched?
As a Photoshop beginner I am very proud of the outcome, however I realise that it doesn’t look professional. The pictures taken by me are not in a great quality and it was very hard to produce page with so many pictures. I usually keep everything minimalistic, however I wanted to show as many garments and information as I could.
What were the constraints and difficulties you encountered?
I had to learn everything in Photoshop and Illustrator from beginning. The biggest difficulty for me was making the background transparent before adding the pink background. I forgot I wanted to make a colour background and realised this after I added everything on the page.
How could you have improved the process or outcome?
After printing the page I realised that the embellishments I added on the page pixelates, so I could have put them into Illustrator and do the image trace before putting them onto my page.
