Doctor Serenity VanOwen, world renowned °cryptozoologist, has released volume one of her bestiary series for the public’s eye for the very first time. Doctor VanOwen has documented various species she has encountered within the wilds of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Photographic and illustrative evidence belies the wealth of knowledge within the pages of the text. Printed on paper vellum, you will receive a replica of her personal journals. Dare to open the pages of the leather-bound tome and open your mind to the believed-to-be-non-existent.

So I have officially finished my Senior Portfolio. This is a project I’ve been working on for over two years now; and it’s finally finished. The bestiary composes of the physical book, 24 prints, leave behinds, business card, artist statement, pdf portfolio, web portfolio, artist resume and it will have a slip cover later.  You can view the entire portfolio on my website: http://danamweise2.wix.com/weiseimagery

The Concept
-These began from my Remnants series of overhead black and white images of various animal skulls in my Concepts class with David Wasserman.
-From there it evolved into an actual beastiary in my Portfolio I class with Cadrian.
-All skulls and bones were purchased from reputable places and taxidermy websites. The Bone Room in Berkeley, CA is really awesome check them out: http://www.boneroom.com/

The Photographs
Only 10 images were produced with 1 illustration and the dimensions of the paper were not appropriately sized in Portfolio I.
-The end result ended in my Senior Portfolio class with Lisa Levine where I added two more photographs and drew 11 illustrations.
-A lot of photoshop went into the process of the image including the graphic design components including grids. The photoshop retouching included additions of orbital sockets, lengthening of tusks with liquefy, merging of various bone structures, and more.

The Illustrations
-The illustrations themselves are done on a wacom tablet.
-A lot of the beasts were hand drawn in SAI.
-Photobashing and photo compositing of stock photos went into some of the process of various images for very base/raw positions of the monsters.

The Graphic Design
-The graphic design of the book itself was also done in photoshop as stated before.
-Indesign was used for the pdf file.
-Fonts that were used were Volstead & Poor Richard
-The design of the book is based off of Botany Plates from the 18th. Cen.
-The fonts on the illustration pages were left mobile to make room for the height chart.

The Book
-Is made from leather, synthetic catgut, rabbit fur and synthetic cat gut.
-Made my fingers hurt for days after sewing said catgut into the leather.
-Was made using reputable leather and fur, no fur-farm.
-Took several weeks to finish.
-All of the images were tea stained with oolong tea and hung to dry.
-Paper used is Moab entrada bright rag 190
