The development of Islamic calligraphy is strongly tied to the Qur'an; chapters, and excerpts from the Qur'an is a common and almost universal text of which Islamic calligraphy is based upon.

In Islamic art the geometric figure of the circle represents the primordial symbol of wholeness, unity and perfection. It means the ultimate source of all diversity in creation. The natural division of the circle into regular divisions is the ritual starting point for many traditional Islamic patterns. It is an important shape in Islamic religion and Islamic geometric design.

The geometric figure of the triangle is the Islamic symbol of human consciousness and the principle of harmony. The points symbolize the knower, the act of knowing and the known.

The geometric figure of the square symbolizes the four elements earth, air, fire and wind.

The geometric figure of the hexagon is close in shape to the circle and is associated with the perfection of the circle. It is therefore a symbol of heaven.
