25th of April Portimão Commemorations

Competition winner - university project, 2nd year, 2nd semester
During the second year of university , the  local council (Portimão) came to us with a competition - aimed at the second and third year classes - to create the advertising campaign for their 25th of April celebrations. For those unfamiliar with this celebration, it is the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution / military coup started on 25 April 1974, which effectively changed the Portuguese regime from an authoritarian dictatorship into a democracy. This was a bloodless Revolution epitomised by the throwing of carnations.

These yearly celebrations are held all over the country, and the advertising is generally represented by a carnation (due to the throwing of many of these on that date ), therefore  it was important for me to represent not only what this day stands for,but to express it  in an original way, without reverting to well know and overused styles from before,it had to be eye catching, thought provoking ,i tried to say the same message but in a different way.

After carefully researching the meaning of what this day represents, and making a list of terms related to the events, I decided to make a composition with words which represented the day, something which any Portuguese person could relate to, regardless of their age. It has a clean image, opting for grey lettering in different weights, with the '25 of April' as the main 'character' of the campaign - the red representing the rage felt during this time, and the inverted 'r' representing the revolution.

This campaign was chosen by the local council, and was placed all over the city during the commemorations. They  created an exhibition area where all the participating students could show their work, this was open to the general public and was the backdrop for the festivities in the city on the 25th of April 2011. The council placed the lettering which was used in the posters, on the outside of this building,  It is highly visible for anyone entering Portimao, and,  is still on the walls to date.
