Passenger and freight rail travel are integral to urban and rural economies. The large, dynamic loads imparted on railroad track create deformations that can lead to derailment past critical thresholds. MerMec (formerly ImageMap Inc.) develops dynamic measurement products for track and wheel profiles that are currently fielded across five continents.
Through three summers of internships, I gained a year of experience designing, testing, and improving track measurement products. Working with technicians, manufacturers, and engineers, I helped release a mounting frame and sun shield for a high-speed railroad track measurement product, researched track measurement techniques, and delivered engineering solutions to a variety of customer product issues. I also helped design and implement a pneumatic paint-release system for marking rail defects, performed load analyses, and developed and fielded a glass cleaning technique for cameras subject to extreme environmental conditions.
