Dementia was inspired by personal contact with Alzheimer and dementia patients. My relationship with them and their carers, backed by further research, led me to creating a set of images which help illustrate how this progressive condition alters the reality in which the patients live. Perceptual illusions and fragmentary memories created by their illness can be overwhelmingly confusing. Yet, the way these people cope and use their memories lets them order the fragmented world and deal with their disease in their own way.

By photographing familiar objects I wanted to provide an objective description of the patient’s home surroundings.
By manipulating the look of domestic normality I aimed to discuss the way this degenerative condition changes the realities
we take for granted.
