Les Mitch's profile

Safety Systems and Signs Hawaii Website

Safety Systems and Signs Hawaii is a provider of safety equipment and traffic control services in the state of Hawaii.

In 2004, I supervised the first version of the e-commerce website; a customized version of the MerchantSpace software. This site launched and presented during the Governor's Pacific Rim Safety Conference [PacRim] of that year to great success. By the end of 2004, company revenue increased by 8% (approximation).

After tremendous activity, I proposed and managed a project to redevelop, redesign and relaunch for the 2006 PacRim; the project also include 2 more business units (Brandy Signs and One Shot supplies) with separate domains - but all running from the same customized e-commerce package called ElasticPath.
Overall revenue for all three business units jumped by 15% by the end of 2006.

With the growth of the websites, a restructuring was necessary with the implementation of a Content Management System (CMS), splitting the e-commerce from the editorial content.
Again, a redesign began in 2007 with a change in corporate structure and capital investment.
That project was delivered by 2010 - with another increase in combined revenue.

Role: Marketing Director
Responsibilities:
Project Manager, Managing Web Developer (Java), Server Administrator (Linux, Apache/Tomcat),
Database Administrator (MySQL), Supervisor (max 4 team members), Marketing Mentor, Graphic Designer, Writer

Site Technology:
Java, ElasticPath (customized), Apache Roller (for content),
Atlassian's Jira (bug and development management) and Confluence (intranet wiki).
Developing Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) depository to connect with e-commerce products.

The following is the visual status of the website in February of 2012.

Website home page with scrolling banner linked to articles or products, product spotlight, CSS coded collapsable side menu and major category top menu. Training classes were also heavily marketed on the front page, with articles fed into the layout from Apache Roller.

Display of article list (blog style) hosted in Apache Roller then ported into home page display.

Content like this article was managed in the Apache Roller instance hosted outside of the e-commerce server.
Part of my responsibility was to curate, edit, and write content to help educate consumers (B2B & B2C) on product purpose and use.

Typical course display. Product SKUs were created for each date to enable online purchase.

Typical Product Page with cross- and up-selling.
Shopping categories would expand based on customer selection or if the customer was directly linked to the product page.

Key design phases of the website under my leadership.
Please note, various aspects of these pages did not work due to the nature of the archive system.
Some images are missing, and links do not resolve, so am only able to capture certain aspect of the site.
Thank you for your understanding.
