Transport API is Britain’s first comprehensive open platform for transport solutions. They secure open data feeds from key industry sources such as Traveline, Network Rail and TfL and package it up as APIs for use by web and app developers for travel apps, portals, hyperlocal sites and business analytics.
They offer nationwide timetable, departure and infrastructure information for schedules, live departures and archived services running across all transport modes. Their APIs are currently being used by Citymapper, Elgin, Network Rail and the Greater London Authority.
We designed a responsive web app for them which could showcase the rich variety of APIs they make available. The design process was very much ‘mobile first’. We based our designs on the smallest smartphone display in common use; the iPhone 4. If we could ensure that the complex journey planning information worked in that environment and the user experience was a good one, we knew that it would work on more generous widths.
We created 40 page templates, each one at mobile and desktop width and drew a rich library of icons for all eventualities. We oversaw the front-end build and collaborated with Transport API on the implementation.
