CHASM
A Watercolor Installation
A chasm is a deep fissure in a surface. It is a division in the earth that forms a horizon of precipices and jagged inclines. A chasm occurs because of a weakness in a structure, the materials give way and the earth collapses, ushering separation.

This body of work is my exploration into the tension created by a chasm. Rifts and tears are apparent in our everyday life. We stand on divided ground, partake of broken bread, and suffer though unfortunate tears and wounds in our relationships with others.

Painting these watercolor washes on a delicate surface addresses the fragile state that a rift causes. In order to create a place of meditation and contemplation the panels are hung like tapestries that are reminiscent of the early 15th century chapel paintings. In the process of making this work and installing it in this space, I have found that when the chasm is fully considered, the division, though painful, proves beautiful. The chasms in our life when viewed in the right perspective can form into something harmonious, and even lovely.
