Ceramic Works
Below are photos of some of my ceramic works created by me, De Waal Immelman, between 2011 and 2016. The older pieces at the bottom were made and gas fired at the studio of Taiwanese master potter Wang Hong Shiang who has taught me a great deal in the past years. I had a small studio for a number of years at my house on Yangming mountain in northern Taipei. I'm currently living back in South Africa, creating cups and other functional ware.
Items labeled 'Wood fired' were taken to the Pingxi or Sanzhi wood fired kiln in northern Taiwan or Miaoli in central Taiwan and fired to over 1200 degrees Celcius using only wood. This unpredictable process takes 5 full days of constant labor plus an additional 5-7 days to gradually cool down and leaves unique one-of-a-kind tones on the raw clay body. These tones are created by flames and also by ash deposits.
