Experiential Space Design: The Rabbit and the Tortoise

EXPERIENCE ZONE FOR THE LAUNCH OF A NEW SERIES OF KARADI TALES

Karadi Tales is launching a new series of books based on Aesop’s Fables, illustrated in new styles.
For the launch, an experience zone needs to be created adjacent to a bookstore.
This will stay for the duration of a month. The experience should be inspired by one of the fables
and the book‘s style. The space should depict the moral of the story.

The fable I was given to work on was the story of the Rabbit and the Tortoise. We had to interpret the story in our own way. The moral I extracted from the story was to 'Be brave and face all your fears, no matter how challenging.'
THE EXPERIENCE

Through the experience, the child should essentially learn the moral of the story. The activities in this space put the children through through small challenges, each associated with different fears. On overcoming each, the children are rewarded.

THE SPACE

The space is aimed at creating the kind of environment that might exist during the rabbit and tortoise's race. It recreates a forest with various animals watching and cheering. The floor has lines which simulate a race track. The lines even give direction in the space.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS
The style is composed of line drawings, inspired by Gond and Madhubani art forms.
The use of lines also signifies movement.
THE PRODUCT
An illustrated childrens’ book with a small device which projects an animated version if the story on the ceiling.
This evolved from the need to read before sleeping.
Problems faced in that situation:
1. Discomfort of reading while lying down
2. Inconvenience of getting up to switch off the light.
