"This new exhibition features 16 noted Northern California contemporaries who don’t necessarily label themselves as fiber artists. Provocative pattern-based works incorporating graphic design, multimedia, printmaking, sculpture and installation come to the Art Department, where textiles courses are in high demand at a time when other California colleges have eliminated programs."

"The four hanging scrolls sweeping dramatically from the gallery’s ceiling to the floor are from Julie Chang’s series Design for the Well-Lived Life. The work, in Chang’s words, “is rooted in an investigation around cultural identity, highlighted by the ways in which patterns serve as powerful and ubiquitous markers of class—as symbols of arriving and belonging.” Combining imagery from disparate sources, such as ethnic gift cards, t-shirts, and wrapping paper, Chang navigates through a complex space of cultural and social values and anxieties. Traditional Chinese textile design, European wallpaper patterns, and elements of contemporary graphic design are juxtaposed with visual icons drawn from her experience of growing up in Orange County. Chang blends the cultural identities of these materials, seeking to create a dialogue around their use and meaning in relation to issues of race, gender, class, and the commodification of culture."
