CASTRO VALLEY LIBRARY
ARTISTS WALL COMPETITION
Studio Under Manufacture - Competition Winner
Project Status: Complete

In 2007, Studio Under Manufacture asked me to assist them in an open entry competition sponsored by the Alameda Arts Commission.  The program for the competition was to design an art piece that would hang on a central wall that divided the adult and children’s areas of the library.

Using a book as our take off point, we started to examine the ways in which similarly shaped objects react differently depending on their materiality.  Using thin
wood laminates and recycled HDPE (high density polyethelyne), as well as specific
cuts to release tension, we were able to control a variegated system that
prejudiced material pliability.  As a whole, the individual pieces create a large
flowing form that covers the central wall of the library.  Different colored HDPE pieces are used to demarcate zones for disciplines of subject matter.

I assisted in all aspects of this project, including: 3D modeling and rendering, idea generation, and post-production work.
