The Living Ocean & Coast
Preservation & Sustainable Development of the Ocean & Coast: Climate & Environment
Project Overview
The Expo’s Thematic Pavilion exhibition aims at shedding light on humankind’s knowledge and technological advancements concerning Ocean and Coastal sustainability and identifying ways of resolving related challenges. A new paradigm will be created, where the ecosystem’s preservation is of paramount priority and Ocean preservation can become a new frontier for global cooperation and harmonious coexistence.
Exhibition Masterplan

Concept Development
The project is determined by two key ideas. The first one is the notion of rewinding. The act of winding back or anew a tape, a situation, an event. This simple act provides us with the opportunity to reconsider and revisit a situation, possibly re-evaluate our approach, make new choices and even write over.
Acknowledging our individual responsibility and power is the second key idea. Every situation we find ourselves into is the result of our personal choices and actions. It is us that shape our lives and futures, through our decisions and non-decisions. Projecting this to the public sphere, it is each one of us as part of a whole that is responsible for the course of our society and the future of our world. Our power, as individuals, as community, as nations lies in our choice and responsibility to act upon it or not to.

Moodboard
Inspired by the EXPO logo the moodboard explores the current environmental situation and how it is affected by our over-exploitation of resources

Design Proposal
The Design concept develops around a 3-D wave structure that surrounds and carries the visitor throughout the exhibition. Inspired by the Expo’s logo, where a wave of clean water introduces sustainable development, this adaptable 3-D design element defines the identity of the entire exhibition, unifying the different spaces while communicating the exhibition’s key messages.
Waves transfer energy through time and space. A direct analogy can be made to our current situation, where energy is the action demanded, space is the ocean and coast and time is now.

Unsustainable Development Pod

Content Development

The Pod explores what unsustainable development means in terms of the ocean and marine life, highlights dangers and side-effects and introduces possible solutions deriving from global cooperation.

Design Proposal

The design is based on 3 key features: the Fishnet structure, the Wave element and the Wall Projections. The three features complement each other creating a unique and immersive environment, while each one is also used separately to communicate different messages.

Fishnet structure
The oversized fishnet, a metallic structure about 6 m high, is a visual comment on overfishing and the overexploitation of natural resources. Placed in the center of the pod, its surface is used to project images, audiovisual material and hold interactive exhibits.
Wave structure
The adaptable Wave element that runs along the entire exhibition is trasformed into an extendable metallic structure wrapped in white stretch fabric material. Placed 5-6 meters above ground level, it is used to define the ocean surface. Piercing the fishnet structure, the entire installation simulates fishnets being pulled out of the ocean. With water imagery projected on the structure, the visitors find themselves underwater, into the deep ocean.
The extendable structure, programmed to move slightly, constantly changes shape to communicate the fluidity and movement of water. Additionally, it is used to control the light in the lower gallery space, and enhance the dim, soothing underwater ambience of the pod.
Wall Projections
To communicate the volume and immensity of the ocean, the design makes use of the gallery’s total height. The walls, separated into three design zones through projections, create a background for the fishnet structure.
