Reuse and Redesign

DESCRIPTION

The objective of this project was to take excess RIT campus cafeteria garbage and give it a second life. I chose to use Dole juice boxes and pouches. Once an option for reuse was selected, a potential redesign for packaging was implemented to better support the reuse.
RAW MATERIAL
REUSE
RIT Campus battery recycling program - Dole juice boxes were unglued and turned inside out. The hole for the spout of the bag provides an ideal deposit location for batteries, turning waste into a waste collector.
Ice packs for cooling catered food - the RIT cafeteria often caters events and needs ice packs to keep large amount of food cool. Excess juice can be rinsed from the bags, refilled with water, then frozen as ice packs.
REDESIGN
Folds and Tabs - Existing Dole juice boxes are glued together. If a tabbing system was created the boxes could be easily inverted and reused for other purposes such as the battery recycling program.
Tab for Cap - Current caps on the juice bags can be removed, but they need to be pryed off with a tool. If the cap were equipped with a small thumb tab, the cap could easily be removed, making the refilling and freezing process more ideal for users.
