195 Morgan Avenue

195 Morgan Ave. is a hotel, restaurant, bar and event space in Bushwick, NY.   It is intended for the artistic community.  The typical guests stays here for longer periods of time than the typical tourists. He/she also uses the office and studios for their own work while staying here and therefore interacts with the other artisitc guests like themselves and the local community that uses the public spaces and attends events, restaurants and bar in the building.
The space is divided into private, public and transition spaces.  The private is made up of the hotel; the public includes the resataurants, bar and event spaces; and the transition space is made up of the studio and office space, which will be used mainly by hotel guests or other recurrent guests.  That lets these guests have easy access to the studios and offices and also serves a shield to the more private hotel space and as their public face to the main part of the building.
The organizational layout of the public spaces (restaurant, bar and event space) is based on the idea of inverting the roles and spaces we have commonly established for the areas of service in hospitality places. From relegated to the back or hidden, to out in the open and making of the service a “performance” in itself.  This allows the guests to interact visually and physically with what is going on in all of the spaces of the building.

The hotel in the building also has the idea of openness and interaction between guests in their own enclosed and private space. It revolves around a central atrium that allows for common areas that are visually accessible to all rooms.
