On Forward Momentum

The series, "On Forward Momentum," focuses on a pivotal question that was posed during the making of each piece, which is: Is there any sort of parallel between the substance of which human beings are made and the cultural interactions that they have? Plainly put, each piece is a consideration of how an individual exists inside of a whole. I was researching and reading about how matter physically moves through space, and how energy is transferred when an object is set in motion. For a time, P=MV, or Forward Momentum= Mass x Velocity, acted as a clean, poetic metaphor for how people interact. Shared with the self importance of human consciousness is the reality of the limitations of one's physicality. People are symptoms of their natural environment. We are lots of tiny little pieces: oscillating, colliding, absorbing, sharing and rejecting space, each carving out their own individual pathway. It is as if with out conscience, in the same way that a rock knows nothing of the hillside that it slides down or a molecule knows nothing of the biological current that it travels, our collective culture moves with a forward momentum that exists without memory.
