Seeing the Unseen. Photography Balloon Breaking

Seeing the Unseen
High Speed Balloon Breaking Photos 1975  (Film)  and 2007 (Digital)

Images are captured at speeds 175,000 of one-second. Traditional flash was used that was triggered by a simple switch taped to the back of the balloon. When the balloon started to break it pulled the switch together causing the flash to fire. By adjusting the distance of the contact area I could control when the photo could be taken during the explosion.
The following images were taken in 1975, using a Rollei SLX medium format camera, Honeywell Strobanar flash, many balloons, glitter, baby powder, darts and lighters.
The following images were photographed in 2007 using a Canon Digital EOS Mark II camera, Honeywell Strobanar flash, many balloons, glitter, baby powder, darts and lighters.

For added effect, we used laser projection technology to project interesting images directly on the balloon.
