The Flight of Icarus

These paper sculpture images were created to illustrate the Greek myth of Icarus and his father, Daedalus in a book published by National Geographic Educational Books.

Imprisoned on an island, legend has it the two characters created wings from feathers and beeswax to escape. However the story says that Icarus ignored his father's warnings and flew too close to the sun. The tragic result was that the wax melted, his wings disintegrated, and Icarus plunged to his death.

All three images were selected by the Association Of Illustrators for publication and exhibition in "Images 33 - The Best of British Illustration". Photography is by Jonny Thompson.
