Photo Manipulation
Background Replacement
This is an example of simple photo manipulation, using Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. I did this project to help my husband out, because he wanted to use this photo of himself for a professional purpose. Obviously, I had to crop myself out, and the man to his left. Unfortunately, the shape didn't work when I uploaded it to his professional profile, so I had to re-think things.

I decided to crop it into a square, leaving the man on the left in the photo. I then used the "quick selection" tool to separate my husband from the background, and put him in a layer by himself. I then searched for a photo I could use as a decent background - something fairly monotone and simple (so I would have less editing work to do, and it would be a more natural fit). My choice was a golf course. I placed the golf course photo in the background, put Sean's layer on top, and then just did some touch-ups around the edges of his face and shirt to make it look as natural as I could. The only thing I would change is the proportion. His head looks too large for the background (but in my defense, my hubby does have a larger-than-average sized head).

This was my first attempt at replacing a background, and I did the whole project entirely through trial-and-error, no online help or tips. I am very pleased with the final outcome, but would be so much happier if the proportion was more realistic. So, I'll continue to work on this area of photo manipulation, and see what I come up with. It was a really fun challenge for me!!
