TETRIS Watercolor
A Portrait, done with a tetris overlay.
My girlfriend loves old fashioned games (Atari isn't the newest thing anymore?!) so I painted her portrait- with a twist.
The idea is that we are who we are because of a complex set of experiences, possessions, friends, families, desires, ideas and dreams that make up a unique reality of what our life is. These cannot be duplicated, only mimicked. The many pieces in the portrait are represented by the Tetris blocks, creating a unique portrait that can only result in Samantha.
I used a watercolor mask after applying a couple coats of watercolor for darkening the shadows in a lower layer. This is why some empty spaces are darker than others..
I applied a predetermined tetris map over this first layer and began painting the color layers. In all this took me about 20 hours to complete. The poster-sized painting turned out nicely, with better colors in real life as all art seems to. The missing block occur on purpose. They represent those times we missed something, or a gap yet to be filled... just like our missed opportunities in the game.
