The Deserted Village Project

This was a group project that was inspired by Oliver Goldsmith in 1770. I was struck how effectively the tone of our stanzas could be transferred from that time period to a modern setting. We decided to use the current water charges protest, austerity and homelessness issues to bring a further depth to our finished piece. The original poem was already about rural depopulation and the dangers of excess wealth,, which lined up well with the current atmosphere of youth  emigrating and the banking crisis of 2008 that is still being felt today. The final piece essentially became a work of political commentary on the state of today’s Ireland.
