During the course D7011A, Advanced Prototyping at Luleå University of Technology we were given the task of design and manufacturing a realistic mock-up model of a robotic vacuum cleaner for STIHL. The first phase was to identify and analyse key features of STIHL´s design profile to gain a deeper understanding of their products and also to help us visualise how a robotic vacuum cleaner from STIHL would look like. From the selected idea, a clay model was made and 3D-scanned into the surface modelling software Alias Automotive. A detailed model was created in Alias and CNC-milled in polyurethane foam. The foam was then used as a core for vacuum forming the plastic shell. Components such as power buttons and handles were 3D-printed in plaster to give it a nice and smooth finish. Finally all parts were carefully processed and spray-painted in the original colours of STIHL to generate a real product impression.
