Boston University Campus Wayfinding

Boston University Campus Wayfinding
Roll Barresi & Associates, 2006
Boston University is a thriving campus consisting of various buildings located along Commonwealth Avenue. They offer schools for everything from Business to Fine Art to Dentistry, and have tons of illustrious alumnae and faculty. However, not many people are aware of all of BU's programs or reputation.

To make matters worse, being in the hub of the city means that the campus is broken up by the Green Line train, burger joints, stores, yoga studios, and parking lots. It was somewhat hard to tell where BU began and ended. BU approached Roll Barresi and Associates looking to get more street-level recognition.
Andrew Barresi and I came up with a two-level system for identifying the campus: large, red beacons and individual building signs.

The beacons use BU's own photography to highlight each department, call out famous alumnae and faculty, and provide a crucial visual symbol repeated through the campus that stands out day and night. They also provide much-needed wayfinding. The vertical red square motif is repeated in building signage as well.
Now passerby not only know which buildings are part of Boston University, but they know what's going on in each part of the campus too.
