realize "flowall"

Industrial Design
"Inspired by the artistic and structural works of Santiago Calatrava."

Flowall is a lighting system that aims to forge connections with the user in physical and phenomenological terms.
Flowall takes the form of a swathe of vertically oriented boards - or modules -that hang against the wall. Each module has two folding points - one at the top and one closer to the middle of the module.
The top folding point hinges upwards and the lower one hinges downwards. Along the length of Flowall, the lower folding points trace a wavy line.

When the user touches a module, it creates a group with its neighbouring modules and they fold up in a gradual fashion, forming a flow of modules. Flowall thus takes a wave-like look. The brightness of the LEDs installed in each modules depends on its folding angle. As such, a flow of light is also created. The user of Flowall experiences its reaction to their touch, as well as the resulting change in character of the space being inhabited.

I hope my last work "flowall" is still remained in somebody's mind. Basically, that wall lighting design won the 'red dot concept award - best of best' but it wasn't competitive at all in real because of many technical difficulties and price. So I decided to make it for real without sensor which is not yet competitive in furniture field. On behalf of that, I used tension of strings to keep kinetic flow of lighting structure.

This below is first trial. (June-August 2011)
this video is rough mock-up to figure out how it works
first trial was made of sanded acrylic and epoxy hinge, planned to bulb with pull-switch so it was designed light is on when the pull-switch is pulled down.
It worked, however, it was too fragile and get tangled sometimes, so it wasn't even allowed to control freely.
Afterwards, I made another one to fix out every bad point for the lighting.
The second trial was covered with cloth and stitch instead of hinge to be stronger, to be clean.  And assembled duplicate structures to be light weight and simple.
